Questions to ask during your free consultation

An initial consultation with a therapist can help you determine whether that therapist would be a good fit for you and your concerns. Therapists often offer free consultations that are limited in time. Make the most out of your consultation by coming prepared with questions of your own.

This article includes:

  1. Your Concerns and Therapeutic Fit

  2. Cost and Coverage

  3. Scheduling

  4. Education and Expertise

Section 1: Your Concerns and Therapeutic Fit

Explain your concerns to your prospective therapist and learn about how they can help you. Each therapist has a unique approach, and some may be a better fit for you.

  • What type of therapy do you offer?

  • How would you describe your style?

  • What is your general approach and philosophy to helping?

  • What does a typical session look like?

  • How would we set up counselling goals?

  • Are you directive in your approach?

Section 2: Cost and Coverage

Ask about the therapist’s pricing structure and cancellation policy. Verify if the therapist can offer direct billing or will accept your insurance.

  • What is your cost per session?

  • How long is each session?

  • Do you have a sliding scale or offer low-cost sessions?

  • What insurance providers do you accept? Do you offer direct billing?

  • What is your cancellation policy? Will I be charged for cancellations or no-shows?

Section 3: Scheduling

Check if the therapist’s schedule matches your own.

  • Do you offer in-person, video, or phone therapy?

  • How often should I attend sessions?

  • How long will therapy last?

  • In general, which days and times are you available to see me?

  • How do I book a session?

  • How do I cancel a session?

  • Do you allow last-minute bookings and crisis support?

Section 4: Education and Expertise

Ensure that your prospective therapist has the right educational and professional background to work with you.

  • How much experience do you have treating concerns like mine?

  • What degree do you have?

  • Are you currently licensed to practice therapy in [this location]?

  • Can you offer a diagnosis?
